Which Paint to Choose for Wooden Windows
There’s a reason decorators charge more for windows than for any other joinery. A panelled door is flat, sheltered and still. A window is a lattice of narrow mouldings that swells in autumn, shrinks in summer, bakes in full sun and takes driven rain head-on — and, if it’s a sash window, has to keep sliding after you’ve painted every face of it.
We repaint windows as part of almost every restoration we carry out around Cambridge, and the failed paint we strip off tells a consistent story: it’s rarely the topcoat that let go. It’s bare wood that never saw primer, end grain left to drink water, paint laid over soft timber, or a window painted shut and then forced. System and preparation decide how long a paint job lasts; which tin you picked comes a distant third.
Still, the choice matters. This guide compares the four paint families honestly, then covers primers, preparation and the sash-specific rules that keep windows moving once the paint has hardened.
Why windows are the hardest thing in the house to paint well
Timber is never still. A window is built from slender sections — stiles, rails, glazing bars — with more joints and edges per square metre than any other joinery, and every joint flexes as the timber takes on and gives up moisture. The paint film is asked to stretch with all that movement; rigid films crack at the joints first, and water gets in behind the crack.
Exposure does the rest. Windows sit proud of the wall, catching full sun and driven rain that brickwork shrugs off, while the glass reflects heat back onto the paintwork. Worst are the horizontal surfaces: water runs off a stile but sits on a sill, a bottom rail or a glazing bar, and standing water finds every pinhole — failure almost always starts there, sill first.
Sash windows add a problem no other joinery has: sliding surfaces. Put paint where the sash runs and the coating becomes, functionally, glue. Careless painting is the most common cause of sash windows that won’t open we get called to — the rules below keep your paintwork out of that guide.
The four paint systems, honestly compared
Every window paint belongs to one of four families. None is simply the best; the right pick depends on the timber’s condition, the elevation’s exposure and how much drying time you can live with.
Solvent-borne gloss (oil and alkyd)
The traditional choice. Its virtue is a long open time: the paint stays workable on the brush, flows out so brush marks disappear, and cures to a hard, glassy film that shrugs off knocks and cleaning. The trade-offs: recoating is slow, typically overnight between coats (check the data sheet), so a full system stretches across most of a week; whites yellow with age; the film keeps hardening until it turns brittle and cracks at the joints rather than stretching; and it’s high-odour, with white spirit cleanup.
Water-borne acrylics and hybrids
The modern default, with a strong case on windows: an acrylic film stays flexible, so it moves with the timber instead of cracking at the joints. Recoat times are measured in hours — two coats in a day is realistic — whites stay white, the odour is low and brushes wash out under the tap. Water-borne paint dries fast, so brush marks don’t flow out; it wants a quality synthetic brush, decisive strokes and no fiddling with half-dry paint. And it blocks: freshly painted faces pressed together will stick, even days after the paint feels dry. On a wall that hardly matters; on a sash window it decides whether the window still opens — which is why the painting order below matters most with acrylics.
Microporous paints and opaque woodstains
Microporous coatings are films engineered to let water vapour migrate out through the paint while still shedding liquid water. The point is blister resistance: when moisture in the timber warms up and tries to escape, a conventional film bubbles and peels; a microporous one lets the vapour through. They earn their keep on windows with a history of damp — timber repaired after rot, elevations that take a lot of weather. Their limits: breathability means little if the coating can’t reach the timber, so over six old layers of gloss the claim is academic; opaque woodstains, the thinner end of the family, build less film — less grain filling, less protection on the horizontals; and no coating is a cure for rot.
Traditional linseed oil paint
The oldest system, and probably what your window was first painted with if the house is Victorian. Linseed oil paint doesn’t form a plastic film on the surface; it penetrates the timber and dries within it, so there’s nothing to blister or peel. Maintenance is different in kind: a tired linseed finish is revived by wiping over with a little linseed oil rather than by stripping and repainting. It demands patience — coats must be brushed out extremely thin, and each can take days to dry, so a full system is measured in weeks. The finish is a soft sheen, and in shady spots the oil can feed surface mildew. It comes into its own on conservation work and old, resinous timber that modern films struggle to grip.

Primers and undercoats: the system underneath matters more
When paint peels off a window, what failed is almost never the topcoat — it’s the bond underneath, or the absence of one. Primer, undercoat and topcoat from the same family will outlast the finest topcoat brushed straight over bare wood.
Bare softwood must be primed, full stop — with an oil-based wood primer or an acrylic primer-undercoat, matched to your topcoat family. After sanding, spot-prime every patch rubbed through to bare timber — unprimed patches are where the water gets in first. Aluminium wood primer earns its place on resinous timber, where knots and pitch bleed through ordinary primers, and on previously oiled timber, which standard primers struggle to grip.
End grain is the main drink-hole in any window: timber soaks up water many times faster through the cut ends — sill ends, the feet of stiles, the undersides of rails — than through the face. Prime end grain twice — the first coat soaks in, the second seals. And back-prime any new timber going in, coating the hidden faces before it’s fixed, because once it’s in they’ll never see a brush again.
The undercoat is not optional padding: it builds the film, provides the opacity that lets two topcoats cover, and gives the topcoat a keyed surface to grip; skipping it is a false economy.
Preparation is most of the job
On a window, the brushwork is the last tenth of the job; everything before it decides whether the paint lasts. Wash down with sugar soap, rinse and let the timber dry — grime and chalked paint will stop any coating gripping. Scrape back everything loose to a firm edge: if a scraper lifts it, the new paint would have lifted with it. Then sand through the grits — 120 to feather the edges of scraped patches flat, 180 to smooth and key the old paint, 240 for the light rub between coats later.
Deal with the timber before you fill. Probe the sill, the bottom rail and the joints with something pointed; if it sinks in, that’s rot, and no filler or paint will hold over it. Soft timber needs cutting out and repairing first — our guide to sash window sill repair covers the job.
Fill dents and hollows with an exterior-grade filler, sanded flush once hard. Caulk open joints where the frame meets the masonry — but selectively. Never bridge the drip groove under the sill: that groove stops rainwater tracking back to the wall, and sealing it sends water straight to the brickwork. And never run sealant into the sliding channels of a sash window — those gaps are working clearances and ventilation, not defects.
Painting a sash window so it still slides
Five rules cover what most repaints get wrong.
Keep paint off the sash cords. The SPAB advise keeping cords paint-free, with good reason: a painted cord goes brittle where it runs over the pulley and fails early. Slip a strip of card behind the cords as you cut in — and if they’re already frayed, replace them before painting, not after. Our sash cord replacement guide walks through that job.
Don’t paint the sliding surfaces. The pulley wheels and the channel faces the sash actually runs against should not see the brush at all — paint here does nothing but bind the window. Once the surrounding paint is dry, rub those faces with candle wax or beeswax instead.
Leave draught seals unpainted. If your windows are draught-proofed, the brush pile or flexible strip in the beads must stay flexible to work. Historic England advise against painting the flexible part of a draught seal — a painted seal is a stiff ridge that neither seals nor lets the sash move. Cut in up to the carrier, not over the pile.
Paint in the right order, part-open. Never paint a sash window closed. Reverse the sashes first — lower raised, upper dropped — to reach the meeting rails and the hidden lower section of the top sash, and paint those. Then return them to nearly closed, leaving a small gap, and paint the remaining faces, alternating so no two wet surfaces rest together. Thin coats throughout: flooded paint is what welds windows shut.
Move the sashes before the paint hardens. Once the paint is touch-dry, slide each sash a little and back, and repeat at intervals as it cures — daily for the first week with water-borne systems, which can block long after they feel dry. It takes seconds each time.
One habit worth copying from the old trade: on putty-glazed windows, carry the paint a couple of millimetres onto the glass. That small overlap seals the top edge of the putty against rain. Cut the line by hand, or tidy it with a blade once dry.
Sheen and colour
Gloss is the traditional exterior finish for a reason: the smoother the film, the better it sheds water and dirt. The price is honesty — gloss shows every ripple, filled patch and brush mark. Satin is more forgiving over repaired timber and is the natural finish of most water-borne systems; dead-flat finishes are best kept indoors.
Colour has consequences too. Dark paint runs much hotter in direct sun, and hotter timber moves more — so a deep colour on a south-facing elevation means more stress on the film and a shorter interval between repaints. It can still be the right choice; make it knowingly. And on a period house, question brilliant white: it’s a modern arrival, and Victorian and Edwardian sashes were more often finished in broken whites, creams, stone shades and deep greens.
Lead paint: read this before you sand anything old
If your windows predate the 1970s, assume lead until proven otherwise. Lead-based paint was only prohibited in the UK in February 1992, and lead pigments were common in household paint up to the 1960s — so a Victorian sash carries decades of it under the modern layers.
Intact lead paint under sound modern coats is not the hazard; dust is. Dry sanding is what turns old paint into breathable lead dust, and it’s exactly what HSE guidance warns against. If old paint has to come off, use a chemical stripper, wet abrasive methods or a sander with on-tool dust extraction, and wear an FFP3 mask. Heat needs care too: a hot-air gun run below 500 °C is acceptable, but blow lamps and gas torches are not, because higher temperatures create lead fume. Keep children and pregnant women away while the work is under way, and bag the debris rather than sweeping it up.
Knowing when to repaint
Forget fixed schedules. South- and west-facing joinery weathers fastest, while a sheltered north elevation stays respectable far longer. Read the paint, not the calendar: when the film dulls and chalks, when hairline cracks appear at the joints, when the putty line opens, it’s asking for attention. Catch it then and the fix is a wash, a light sand and a fresh topcoat. Leave it until the paint is lifting and the timber greying, and you’re into stripping, priming and possibly rot repair — stripping back to bare wood is what adds the cost, so the early topcoat is the best value in the whole cycle.
Common mistakes we’re called in to put right
- Emulsion on the outside of windows. Emulsion is an interior wall paint with no exterior durability: it soaks up water, flakes off and leaves the timber effectively bare.
- Painting in the wrong conditions. Direct hot sun makes paint skin before it can flow out; damp timber lifts the new film from behind; and every paint has a minimum application temperature — check the data sheet, not the calendar.
- Skipping primer on bare wood. Topcoat brushed straight onto bare patches looks fine at first, then releases in flakes because nothing bonded it to the timber.
- Painting the window shut. Closed sashes, flooded coats and no movement while drying — entirely avoidable with the order of work above.
- Painting over rot or flaking paint. Paint holds on no better than the layer beneath it. Over soft or lifting material it’s decoration on a failure already in progress.
- Sealing every gap. Some gaps are working parts: the drip groove drains the sill, and the clearances round the sashes let them run and the frame dry. Caulking the lot traps water inside the joinery.

If you want a low-sheen look outside, use an exterior satin rather than reaching for a wall paint.
Is gloss or satin better for wooden windows?
Both are sound outdoors as long as the paint is a proper exterior grade. Gloss sheds water slightly better and is the traditional finish for period joinery, but it highlights every ripple and repair. Satin is more forgiving over filled or repaired timber and is the natural finish of most water-borne systems. Avoid dead-flat finishes outside — they hold dirt and weather fastest.
How long does it take to paint a sash window?
It depends almost entirely on the preparation and the drying time between coats. A sound window needing a wash, a light sand and fresh topcoats is a fairly quick job; one that needs stripping, rot repair, priming, undercoating and two topcoats spans several days. Solvent-borne paints usually want overnight between coats; water-borne systems recoat in hours — check the data sheet.
Do I need to strip all the old paint off first?
Only where it has failed. Sound, well-adhered paint is a good base: wash it, sand it to dull the sheen and paint over it. Strip to bare wood where paint is cracked, flaking or blistered, where build-up makes the sashes bind in their channels, or where the new system needs bare timber, as linseed oil paint does. Routine stripping adds cost for no gain.
What colour should period sash windows be?
Brilliant white is a modern arrival — Victorian and Edwardian joinery was more often finished in broken whites, creams, stone shades and deep greens. Off-whites also age gracefully, showing grime and yellowing less than a stark white. Very dark colours run hotter in the sun, which means more timber movement on south-facing elevations. In a conservation area, check whether the local authority has a view first.
How do I stop the window sticking after painting?
Keep paint off the sliding surfaces — the channel faces the sash runs against and the pulley wheels — and rub those with candle wax instead. Apply thin coats, and move both sashes gently at intervals while the paint dries so no fresh faces bond together. Water-borne paints can stick to themselves days after feeling dry, so keep the window moving daily for the first week.
